Pangkat Kalutang of Gasan, Marinduque

From the heart of Barangay Bangbang in Gasan, Marinduque comes the Pangkat Kalutang, a remarkable band of local musicians dedicated to preserving the traditional Kalutang—a percussion instrument made from identical pairs of kwatingan and bayog wood that produce distinct pitches and tonal sounds. Under the guidance of Maestro Tirso Serdena, a National Cultural Bearer recognized by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), the group has kept this centuries-old musical tradition alive.

Composed of neighbors, family members, and relatives who are part-time farmers and fishermen, Pangkat Kalutang performs in community gatherings, cultural events, and official functions, delighting audiences with its rhythmic, resonant beats. Their performances are not only a celebration of music but also a living testament to Marinduque’s rich cultural heritage.

In recognition of their significant role in preserving the Kalutang tradition, the group was honored by the 16th Sangguniang Panlalawigan through Provincial Ordinance No. 230 s 2024. Though informal in organization, their talent and dedication have made them a local cultural treasure, earning them spots in tourist brochures and even national television features.

Whether welcoming guests or celebrating special events, Pangkat Kalutang of Bangbang continues to echo the rhythms of Marinduque’s history, proving that the heartbeat of tradition still resonates strongly in the island’s communities.
