National Museum of the Philippines in Boac, Marinduque

The National Museum of the Philippines – Marinduque is housed in a historic Spanish-era structure that once served as the Escuela de Niños, the oldest Catholic school in the province.

In 1856, the building was converted into a carcel (prison) after the burning of the Casa Real. Earlier, in 1807, one of its rooms had been used by the Cuadrillos. It underwent further renovation in 1891 as part of the Casa Real complex. Over the decades, the building also functioned as a tribunal under the Spanish colonial government, the Presidencia during the Philippine Revolution, the office of the Department of Education–Division of Marinduque, the Municipal Trial Court of Boac, and later, the Boac Municipal Library.

Through the efforts of the late Representative Carmencita O. Reyes, the property was formally turned over to the National Museum of the Philippines (NMP) in 1992 by the Municipality of Boac. After restoration, the museum opened its doors to the public on February 22, 1995.

From October 1, 2015, to February 27, 2019, the museum underwent renovation and retrofitting. It was reopened to visitors on February 28, 2019.

Today, the museum features three permanent exhibitions: The Journey Towards the Protection of the Philippine Rise, Submerged History: The Marinduque Shipwrecks, and Moryonan Art and Devotion.
