Laylay Port in Boac, Marinduque

Along the quiet shores of Barangay Laylay in Boac lies a place where the past still whispers through the waves. Once the busiest gateway of Marinduque in the 19th century, Laylay Port served as the province’s major hub for passengers and products bound for Manila and other ports across the archipelago. Its docks carried not only commerce but courage—local revolutionaries heavily relied on this port during both phases of the Philippine Revolution, turning it into a lifeline of movement and strategy.

A few steps from the old lighthouse stands another remarkable piece of history: the Magnetic Observation Station, established in 1912 by the United States Coast and Geodetic Survey. Here, scientists once measured subtle variations in the Earth’s magnetic field, making this quiet coastal corner an unexpected crossroads of discovery and navigation.

Today, the local government has undertaken restoration efforts, preserving the port’s stone remnants, the lighthouse, and the surrounding heritage features. With its open skies, sea breeze, and storied landmarks, Laylay has become a favorite spot for summer outdoor activities—where visitors can explore, unwind, and journey through time in a single afternoon.
