Every Easter Sunday, the town of Gasan in Marinduque comes alive with the Gasang-Gasang Festival, a vibrant celebration of faith, thanksgiving, and creativity in honor of the “newly Risen Christ.” Named after the corals—gasang-gasang—that once lined the town’s shores, the festival brings together 21 barangays in a joyful parade of street dancing, music, and color.
Initiated in 2002 by Mayor Vicky Lao Lim, the festival was designed to encourage visitors to stay longer in Gasan during Holy Week while celebrating the town’s rich cultural heritage. Dressed in vivid costumes made from indigenous materials, the contingents dance to the beat of live marching bands, shouting “Viva El Kristo!” as they move through the streets. The festival culminates in Guingona Park, where the performers’ final numbers are judged in a spirited display of skill, coordination, and artistry.
Though it draws inspiration from other Philippine festivals, Gasang-Gasang has evolved into a unique celebration of Gasan’s history, faith, and community. Over the years, it has become a must-see event in Marinduque, capturing the island’s joyful spirit every Easter Sunday.
