Every year in Barangay Balanacan, Mogpog, Marinduque, the coastline comes alive with vibrant colors, joyful cheers, and heartfelt devotion as the community celebrates the Bangka-Bangka Festival. Held in honor of the Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage, the festival beautifully blends faith, culture, and festivity—reflecting the deep devotion of the locals to their patroness while strengthening the unity of the community.
The festival is not exclusive to Balanacan alone. Its reach extends to the neighboring barangays of Argao, Hinanggayon, and Silangan, whose residents actively take part in the lively activities. This shared participation makes the celebration a cherished event that brings entire communities together, creating a spirit of solidarity that transcends boundaries.
Established in 2017 through the initiative of Rev. Fr. Martin Puertollano, Jr., the Bangka-Bangka Festival was envisioned as an added highlight to the barangay’s annual fiesta. It serves as a warm and colorful welcome to the arrival of the image of the Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage, reminding the community of their steadfast faith and the blessings they seek through her intercession. Over the years, the festival has grown into a meaningful tradition that ignites the enthusiasm of the people and deepens their devotion.
Central to the celebration are two major competitions that showcase both the skill and creativity of the participants. The boat race brings out the strength, speed, and coordination of local paddlers as they maneuver across the waters in friendly yet exhilarating competition. Meanwhile, the boat decoration contest serves as an artistic offering to the Patroness, with participants transforming their boats into floating works of art—brimming with color, symbolism, and heartfelt expression. Winners from both competitions are awarded prizes by the Hermano and Hermana, who lead the cultural and spiritual activities of the fiesta.
While rooted in Catholic tradition, the Bangka-Bangka Festival welcomes everyone, regardless of background. It serves as a bridge that unites people through shared joy, cultural pride, and a common purpose. Whether as participants or spectators, everyone becomes part of a celebration that is both meaningful and uplifting.
Today, the Bangka-Bangka Festival stands as a defining cultural treasure of Barangay Balanacan—a reflection of its people’s unwavering faith, their spirit of cooperation, and their pride in their local identity. Like the boats that glide across its waters, the festival carries forward a legacy that continues to strengthen the community year after year.
